May 2008 – EUROVISION BEYOND EUROPE

Amazingly, since March of this year, 6 CD’s have been released in South Africa which include one or more local versions of Eurovision hits in Afrikaans.

Roy van der Merve of OGAE Rest of the World has kindly shared this news and some of these tracks with Sechuk.com.

CD1

This CD by JAYCEE was released in March and includes two songs from ESC 2006 – “Everything” from Greece as ‘Steeds verlief’ (Still in love) and “Tornero” from Romania as ‘Waar is Jy’ (Where are you).

In addition, a version of the song ‘Efharisto’ from MF 2006 by Bosson is included as ‘Jy Laat My Weet’ (You let me know).

CD2

The second CD was released on 14 April and is by Kobus Muller.

In November 2007, Kobus Muller won the second SUPERSTERRE series.

The ESC song featured on this album is ‘Luister wat jou hart se’, a version of Sweden’s 2001 ESC Entry “Listen to your Heartbeat’, as a duet with Patricia Lewis.

Two other Swedish origin songs are also included, ‘Jy is’, a version of Magnus Carlsson’s ‘You’ from his ‘Live Forever’ album, plus ‘Jy’s die droom’ which is Bosson’s ‘You’ from the album ‘Future's Gone Tomorrow, Life Is Here Today’ as a duet with Nicholis Louw.

The second CD was for release on 16 July by Guillaume.

On this CD, the UK Entry from 2004 ‘Hold on to our love’ by Welshman James Fox is included under the title ‘Ek is jammer’.

Also included is a version the Swedish MF entry from 2002 by Jan Johansen, ‘Siste Andetaget’.

This includes an Afrikaans cover of Norway’s 2008 ESC Entry ‘Hold on Be Strong’.

EXTRA

In addition, OGAE REST OF THE WORLD has prepared a special CD project for BELGRADE.

The CD compilation has 18 songs on it, all sung in AFRIKAANS by 18 different SOUTH AFRICAN/NAMIBIAN artists. The CD will be titled is EUROVISION : ONS SING JOU LIEDJIES (EUROVISION : WE SING YOUR SONGS). The CD will be released in limited amount of just 50 copies: 43 from it will go to the delegations of 43 countries taking part in Eurovision 2008, and the idea is to draw 6 CDs at the Fan stand in Belgrade.
