EUROVISION 2014 - COPENHAGEN - DENMARK

SECHUK JURY 2014 - THE JURY REVIEW FOR BELGIUM

2 Juries - one UK and one International, will comment on and rate the songs of ESC 2014 as they are chosen.

The idea is that the songs will be voted on first impresssions, as most TV viewers will do in May.

The main difference of course is that in May they will be subject to the same production standards and opportunties, something that differs at National Selection stage.

In retrospect this is a very nice ballad that has a stellar voice to back it up, but in a year filled with ballads, this is just another bore. It will just get lost in the mix.

Axel

Quite good.

6

Benedek

Quality ballad good vocals.I think Belgium it has chance to go to the final.I like this song.

Axel has an amazing voice and there is no escaping the fact that he gives his all when singing this song. Having said that 'Mother' is just that little bit too cheesy and sugary for it to be a real contender. With so many other powerful and emotional ballads and performances I worry that some of them may cancel each other out. Belgium does deserve a place in the final though ...

Elias

Completely boring with childish lyrics

José

Axel is a incredible performer, he put us in the exact position he intend, just inside the song. However, I hardly see the young voters touched on their heart, by a song that they might find even depressive.

Please pass the bucket! I love my mother and all that but what on earth were the Belgian public and jury thinking about. Hideous Hideous Hideous!

I don't mind this song, but it's hardly groundbreaking stuff, and in a semi-final full of great ballads, particularly from Azerbaijan , Sweden and Montenegro , I suspect this will quickly be forgotten when it comes to the recaps. Axel's voice and the lyrics of this warrant extra points.

I like this song! It's just so beautiful, the perfomance is  touching and powerfull! It's perfect, this a song that could connect and relate to most of the viewers than this. His voice is awesome.

This just is not my type of music at all. Yes, Axel has a powerful voice but it is too melodramatic for me. Having said that, I think this entry deserves a place in the final but not winning the competition.

Pia

Ok , he´s a good singer, but the melody is to difficult to remember , too complicated, sorry

You might think this is a predictable, obvious, glazed song. A vaguely retro atmosphere, a bit gloomy, a bit exaggerated. The song is yearning, well interpreted, full of feelings. Axel is a very talented singer: his performance gives emotions and this is becoming "a rare thing" in the ESC. A classical and classy song that goes "desperately alive".

Many years ago Barbara Streisand had a song called Mother which became a classic. Will this "Mother" replaces that? The singer has a very good voice and actually the whole production reminds me of Malta 2005 "Angel". So is a second place also the outcome for this song?

Ok, his voice is good, so I give him credit for that. But I get seriously turned off by overly-maudlin, sappy ballads, and anything that describes one's mother as "soul mate" immediately brings my mind to Norman Bates.  Eesh.

Oh my goodness another ballad sung by a man but this really tugs on the emotions. I said it was possibly Yerevan next year but I think this has enough impact to take the prize to Antwerpen.

Brian

OK so this may seem a bit corny but it got a lump in my throat. He delivers it well and makes it believable and as a male ballad is to me much better than Norway . Well done Belgium

Well Axel is a good singer. Sadly that is the ONLY positive thing about this song. The lyrics are laughable and the performance is overwrought, but this type of song has it’s fans so I can actually see it doing well. For me though, this is the worst song of the contest by a country mile.

This shows just how long three minutes can be. We waited almost to the end to get the worst song in the contest I have heard since 1983. Sounds as though it was written by a child for a school project or the first JESC. This annoys me so it will defiantly win.

Like Norway , Belgium goes for a large bearded man with a ballad. However the Belgian effort is a mawkish, slightly creepy affair. Not my cup of anything but this kind of thing goes down well with those who sit glued to trashy talent shows. I think this might do worryingly well.

For me this is the musical equivalent of a Nestlé's Milky Bar.  Unnaturally sickly and sweet with a vague hint of baby vomit.  However, the masses will overindulge in this sugar-fest in droves and come May, the Milky Bars will be on him!

Great voice and the tune is kind of fine. But the whole Mother thing? Just seems a bit odd to me.

6

Eddie

A very musical theatre entry. He has a very good voice and the song builds nicely around him. In a year of ballads, it does stand out as a old fashioned ballad with a big voice. The simple performance will see this to the final.

7

Gary

This is a wow performance of a good song. The guy sure can sing, but the title could send the song either way. On the balance most people hold their mum in high esteem, so this should strike a chord, as it did with Ruslana. Maybe a little insipid, but go Belgium !

I like this one!  The lyrics are perhaps a little 'tweet' and 'cringy' but the sentiment is sincere.  Nice to see someone a little larger taking to the stage and he does indeed have a powerful voice; it perhaps could do with a little more control but a forceful presence.

6

Nico

Yeah , it's a good old fashioned belter , yeah very old fashioned, but who cares? I can see Belgium doing rather well this.

8

Paul J

Great voice but I can’t help finding this a little bit creepy. Boy has mother issues! Will probably qualify but then again it’s an easier year…

Penned by the Scarborough writer who composed Tom Dice's brilliant "Me & My Guitar", this in contrast is the Mother of all bad songs. Dreary tune, badly sung. No final for Belgium again.

Belgium left some crackers behind in the semifinals, but "Mother" was for me the best of the ones that did make the cut. Very emotional, and bound to do very very well, especially with 19 Eurovision countries celebrating Mother's Day that week. Still, I wish it were 2Fabiola representing the Belgians instead.
