EUROVISION 2014 - COPENHAGEN - DENMARK

ECHUK JURY 2014 - THE JURY REVIEW FOR MALTA

2 Juries - one UK and one International, will comment on and rate the songs of ESC 2014 as they are chosen.

The idea is that the songs will be voted on first impresssions, as most TV viewers will do in May.

The main difference of course is that in May they will be subject to the same production standards and opportunties, something that differs at National Selection stage.

I'm surprised by Malta 's choice this year! This one came out as an underdog and that's exactly what it'll be in Denmark . The song is very contemporary and very Mumford & Sons-esque. This one may perform well with the juries and actually end up surprising people like last year!

An okey song, a little bit like last years entry, which I liked a lot. This is a little worse, but still a quite good and catchy melody.

Benedek

This is a good song. Its fresh its not so original but its good enough to have a chance to qualify. The singers are very good and this country feeling is fun.

With 2 previous Maltese representatives not reaching the final, Firelight emerged victorious with their folk song, a genre that isn't seen too often on a Eurovision stage. I get the feeling however that this will be lost among the other songs come May. Malta will have to wait another year for their first victory and indeed a place in the final seems doubtful to me.

Old fashion and boring even if it was one of the best songs of their Final.  Will stracle to be in the Final.

A soporific national final with 20 songs and millions of advertising, resulted on a complete mess. A totally forgettable song , in my opinion the worst of the 20 songs, will represent a nation that I doubt can feel represented their wishes and identity in a Nashville , Tennesse style song

I really like this song. Once again Malta have sent a top class song to the contest. For such a tiny country they really do have some superb singers.

It's nice to have a change of pace from Malta 's usual pop or ballad choices. Surely this should do well with the juries but I wonder if the appeal will be lost on home viewers. Personally I wish they would tweak the backing vocals a bit, but overall I think this is a great entry and I'm so glad that Richard Edwards finally gets to go to ESC after so many excellent entries of his have come up short in previous years. A great choice.

Although pleasant to listen to, I don't think it's a winner. It doesn't look very good on stage, they need to work on the presentation I think. This song has similarities to the Swiss 2014 entry, Malta 2013, Iceland 2011 and probably more. Good to see that folk/country/etc is getting more popular. Undoubtedly there will be more countries this year with a folk/country style song. Looking forward to hear the Dutch entry.

It's an OK song, a bit bland and the voices are to be improve but at least they all look to enjoy it on stage which is nice to watch. I think Malta as again a chance to qualify for the final.

Malta .....also country ...but a little bit difficult and not so good mixed, and you never get points for whistling

Something different from they use to send. A group for Malta since 1999, if I remember well. A good country-style song, simple and catchy enough. A perfect FM hit.

Malta picked a song with the same title as Iceland 2011, and similar to that song, it is soft on the ears and should grow on you the more you hear it. It is, however, not an instant success and so no chances of winning Eurovision.

I am absolutely head-over-heels for this one. We always talk about how important it is to bring a contemporary sound to Eurovision to keep it credible, and this is not unlike what I hear (and love)  on the radio every day. Been a fan of Richard Edwards for a while now, and thrilled to see him take a song like this to the international level.

Malta had quite a few good songs which made watching their (very very long) final easier and whilst 'Coming Home' wasn't my instant favourite it will be something of a novelty to have an Appalachian Dulcimer on stage. If they can get the vocal harmonies right it could do very well.

Another disappointment for me and so surprised this won. Bit bland and doesn't go anywhere the only saving grace is the woman's big voice. be nice if they all sang in tune at the beginning.

This was a rather surprise winner for Malta , but that’s happened for a few years now. I cannot listen to this one without thinking of “I Will Wait” by Mumford and Sons - they sound so similar. It’s performed well enough and is another song aimed at the juries. I’d say it was a qualifier but a likely mid-table finish.

This starts jolly and quirky and the juries will like that, but it simply grinds to a halt. It’s as though they forgot to write the second half so tacked on any old yea yeas etc. In another year this could struggle but with reduced semis it should go through but not to top ten again.

There's no doubting the Mumford-lite feel to this entry but that can only be a positive thing. It's a happy-go-lucky guitar-twanging strum-along from Malta and with this take on folk music popular at the moment, an entry to take note of. At the moment I like it but think I'm probably going to love it before long.

I'm not a fan of this folk/rock kind of nonsense, so sadly this leaves me cold. It may do ok but I'm certainly not a fan.

A grower but really not my thing. Simple but bordering on bland. Where's the tune? You have one chance to grab people's attention and this just doesn't do it.

Eddie

Its Iceland 2011 meets Gary Barlow meets Radio 2. It has a good sound - I prefer the female voice over the males. Problem it doesn't go anywhere or build - just stays at the same level. It's not a bad entry, I would have hoped for something better, building on their recent results.

I like the look of the group – something different for Malta (visually). It feels like they are trying to match the simple coolness of their 2013 entry mixed with a touch of Mumford, but failing in the process. It all feels a bit vague with not enough of a hook going on. It could be re-worked to be more powerful. Otherwise I can’t see it qualifying.

Worthy winner of the national and I like it a lot, it has a great feel about it. Something uplifting about it.  The ESC win is at last 'coming home' to Malta ? Time will tell.

Nico

There's something pleasant about it, yet it doesn't really move me like I feel it should. I'm pretty sure it will be one I will end up cheering on in May, but for now it's not quite hitting the spot.

I'm not sure what to make of this one. It's well-performed and catchy, I just don't really like this sort of music. I'd love Malta to win one day but it won't be 2014!

6

Sally-Ann

I'm in the vast minority of those who quite likes this one.  It's different and musically hypnotic, with the rough male vocal only slightly ruined by the wails of the woman on the piano.  Possible qualifier.

Tristán

The only part I like in this song is when Michelle does her solo bit, so I would have preferred more of that. Another instantly forgettable song, though I've never been a fan of country anyway.
