EUROVISION 2014 - COPENHAGEN - DENMARK

SECHUK JURY 2014 - THE JURY REVIEW FOR RUSSIA

2 Juries - one UK and one International, will comment on and rate the songs of ESC 2014 as they are chosen.

The idea is that the songs will be voted on first impresssions, as most TV viewers will do in May.

The main difference of course is that in May they will be subject to the same production standards and opportunties, something that differs at National Selection stage.

I literally listened to the song several minutes ago and I already forgot the arrangement and melody. There is nothing special with this entry and it almost feels like it will be tacky on stage having the twins as artists for this song.

An okay song, but not that good. But the Tolmachevy twins are really beautiful.

I don't know where this song is going. With twins tried other countries to but didn't succeed too much. Still Russia will have massive votes from the east block but I don't think this time that Russia will do well. For me this song isn't working at all it is cheap and crap.

Members of the same team responsible for Farid Mammadov's 'Hold Me' in 2013 have also had a hand in composing and writing the Russian song for Copenhagen . Incidentally this is the third song called 'Shine' to participate in the contest. The Tolmachevy Sisters have already tasted Eurovision success back in 2006 when they won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. This is up tempo, old fashioned and nostalgic without being in any way outstanding. A winner it isn't but Russia will once again qualify for the final.

I have the feeling that the girls voices are very limited. The song is nothing special and only because we talk about Russia it will do much better that it deserve

May be Russia is getting prepared for a poor result this year and they decide to send a baked in a last second song. They will be on the final just because many of their friends will be in their semi-final and will give them many 12's just from them.

This is an average song sung by two average singers. therefore it deserves an average score

Well it isn't bad, but it doesn't blow me away either. Personally I think this is the weakest entry they've submitted since Mamo in 2009.

I'm pretty sure this is not the final version of the song. The song does sound like a demo like it was produced in a couple of hours and  I don't like the way it sounds now (and this has nothing to do with politics). I'd rather wait for the final version.

Well, I don’t like this one, it sounds so cheap, and it’s really not for me.

Moscow next year ? Perfect song for ESC, I think I have my top 5, and Russia is one of them ! Beautiful ! YEY

Boring, tasteless, colourless song. A weak entry with a repetitive sound. You can perceive it as dull, after different listenings too. Definitely stodgy.

Happy to have twins again at Eurovision. But will they SHINE in Copenhagen ? Personally I hope the political climate does not interfere with Eurovision. I like the song, it is catchy although fairly rough and will probably be fixed closer to the time. But they could not have picked a more unoriginal title. The 4th SHINE in the last years (although I have liked all 4).

I've listened to this four times, and can't remember how it goes.  These girls are going to have a challenging time in Denmark ; hope they're up for the task.

Politics aside this stands a very good chance. Instantly likeable and catchy I found it going around in my head after just one listen. Looking for the double,  if you pardon the pun, I wouldn't rule it out.

I think this will come over very well on the stage. Again, i like the powerful music that accompany's it. definately in my top 10.

The last country to choose are one of this year’s most controversial countries, and not for the music. Russia have played it VERY safe this year with this rather pleasant ditty, and I think it will have no problems qualifying, but I think that they may be quite heavily shunned across Europe for actions taking place outside of Eurovision. Is this unfair? Lots of differing opinions on this. Me? I think they should be judged solely on the music, and I’d squeeze them into the top 10.

I surprisingly like this! It is very Eurovision which may actually make it standout this year and could appeal to many televoters. Despite all the trials the sisters may have to face from the media in Copenhagen ,  I think this could do well.

My heart sank with the opening tinkling piano notes. What followed was an OAP's idea of what a 'pop' song might be. Twee lyrics and a leaden melody did not help. The whole thing sounds as though it was thrown together in fifteen minutes. A big disappointment.

This is a pleasant, if unremarkable, little song, ably sung by two pretty girls.  Whether those voting will chose to vote on this alone remains to be seen.

6

Dean

A catchy, old-fashioned entry. With the team behind it, I'm looking forward to seeing how it will be staged.

It reminds me of a failed Song for Europe entry from the 90s but I can’t remember which. It well produced but I just twins singing about love is always a bit weird. Current political tensions may hamper their chances.

5

Gary

I like this. Fairly gentle stuff, although I expect it to pack a punch in May. I hope that Copenhagen will act kindly to the girls and that the voters vote on the music alone. Nice one!

Matt

Leaving other issues aside and looking at the song only - I like it.  It reminds me of the old SAW/PWL-style of song that I grew up with in the late 80s so has that 'comfort' feel to it. It will be interesting to see what does happen come May.

Nico

Meeah, it doesn't move me. Musically it's very pleasant and I think live it will probably be great, but lyrically it's more contrived drivel. It would have been much better in Russian (it's not like most countries in their semi don't speak it anyway...)

Paul J

Hmm not sure what to make of this one. It’ll probably get a makeover and will be staged well but can’t help thinking that this is Russia ’s weakest entry for a while…

After such a build-up we expected a showstopper. What we get instead is a pretty ordinary, fairly tame ballad with trite lyrics, saved only by some decent harmonies.  I won't be Putin this in my top five.

Tristán

This is growing on me, but was it really worth the long wait? The lyrics are pretty rubbish, and the tune is very dated. I don't want to like it because I'm boycotting Russia , but if I'm going to be really honest it's not that bad. A rather generous 6.
