MATTHEW ANTHONY

Matthew Anthony will attempt to represent  Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 with the song 'Call 2morrow'. We caught up with Matthew during his preparations for MESC 2018 to talk about his career so far, his previous experiences at the Malta Song for Europe / GO Malta Eurosong, and of course the song he hopes to take to Lisbon.

Matthew Anthony, many thanks for taking the time to talk to us! How are you and at what stage are you with the preparations for your participation in the MESC 2018?

I'm currently super excited to share to everyone what I have been working on during these couple of months. At the moment I’m in that stage where I’m seeing everything coming together and it looks amazing!

Before talking in more detail about 'Call 2morrow', can you tell us about yourself? When did you start singing? Are any other members of your family musical and if yes, can you tell us more about them? Did you enjoy a musical education and who have been or are your main musical influences?

I always had a passion for music and song writing; however I never took it seriously. However, about two years ago I decided to start taking singing and dancing lessons and now I am here, a finalist in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest!

Do you have a motto in life and if so what is it?

My motto is to grab the moment!

Matthew Anthony, you were born in Marsascala , Malta . Can you tell us more about the place?

So I've lived in 2 southern cities in Malta , Marsascala and mainly Zabbar. They both offer different sights all with their own history.

February 2018 and you will present the song 'Call 2morrow' with music and lyrics by Jonas Gladnikoff, Tom Wilkund and Peder Erikkson. Can you tell us something about the song and what it means to you? Why should this song be the one to represent Malta this year?

The song, in my opinion, is something new for MESC. It has a certain style and sound that Malta has lacked in its finals. That is why I am super honoured and proud to be presenting such a different song among these amazing 16 songs!

How are the preparations going and can you give us a little clue as to how the song will be staged? Will you have backing vocalists supporting you? Have you decided what you will be wearing?

At this stage everything is ready to go. I won't give out too much info but let's say I won't be the only one on stage and remember that I’m also a dancer myself haha!

How did the collaboration come about and what was your initial reaction when you heard the song? Was it written with you and the Eurovision in mind or was it a happy coincidence?

I was actually working on an original up to two weeks before the deadline. However I decided not to enter with the song as it still had a lot of work to do. Just at that time I was offered this song and immediately fell in love with its difference. Also it was a perfect match for my voice and style so in about a week we had to record master tweak the song just in time to enter it before the deadline!

What would it mean to you to represent  Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest?

It would absolutely mean the world to me! I am such a huge fan of MESC and ESC that I still can't believe I’m in the finals, let alone representing Malta !!!!!

How important is the Eurovision Song Contest in Malta ?

It is considered the biggest musical event in Malta ! It's a very big thing here!

Have you followed the contest closely and do you have a favourite winning song?

Yes, as I already mention I'm a huge fan. My favourite would have to be Gianluca with ‘Tomorrow’!

What in your opinion is the recipe for a successful Eurovision entry?

In my opinion, I think something different and original would work well in Eurovision also a hint of traditional music or some kind of element might just do the trick!

Let us imagine we can go back in time. If you could take one of Malta 's songs to the Eurovision again but perform it yourself which song would it be and why?

Again, I would say 'Tomorrow' Gianluca. The vibe of that song was so nice and the interaction with the crowd was amazing!

In 2016 the song selected during MESC 2016 was not the one that actually represented Malta in Stockholm . This year, just like last year, it has been announced that the song will not be changed. What is your reaction to this decision?

I agree with this decision. We are competing with a whole package, being song, voice, looks, and performance, not just the face or the name! Having said that I strongly believe that revamping the chosen song would do great things as it can be compared with the other competing songs chosen for Eurovision and will attract more interest.

What did you think about the winning song last year, 'Amar pelos dois' performed by  Salvador Sobral?

It's such an amazing and simple song! I love it; however, I wanted to see Bulgaria win last year!

This year the Maltese entry will be chosen entirely by a 50/50 split between a televote and jury. How do you feel about this?

I think this is a very good decision. The Maltese public needs to have a say, however not the full say as the song will be competing with other songs therefore a professional jury can see the potential the songs have to compete with the other countries!

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Mostly I write my own songs and play the guitar!

Apart from singing, what other profession or professions interest you?

I really like music production and dancing!

If you could choose one person to sing a duet with who would it be and why?

It would either be a duet with James Arthur (I just love EVERYTHING about him) or else featuring with Nicki Minaj, that would be epic !!!

Are you a superstitious person? Do you perform any rituals before going on stage?

Not really, as long as I'm fully prepared beforehand!

Time for you to be the Tourism Ambassador for Malta . Can you tell us about your homeland and what makes it so special? What is your favourite dish from  Malta and can you describe it?

Malta is Amazing! The sea, the sun, the nightlife! You have everything you would want to enjoy life! Almost any Maltese food is to die for but probably the most popular and unique and definitely my favourite are the Pastizzi !!!

Do you have a message for the readers of this interview?

I would like to thank all Eurovision followers for making this incredible contest so much more special!!!

Grazzi Matthew Anthony and every success in the contest!

CHRISTABELLE

Christabelle is hoping to fly the Maltese flag in Lisbon with ‘Taboo’. We are pleased to have found out more about her plans for the Contest, so please read on…

What does your song mean to you or mean in general

The lyrics are by myself and Muxu, and the music is by Thomas G.Son. The song is called ‘Taboo’, and it’s an incredibly personal one for me, both because of what I have been through as an individual in my private life, and because it addresses something that is very close to my heart. The song’s message is that we should be open about discussing mental illness and in offering help (rather than judgment) to those suffering from it. We need to change the way we talk about mental illness and encourage those who need help to speak up; but it’s only by working together that we can break this taboo… So, in a nutshell, with ‘Taboo’, I set out to raise awareness about mental health.

Why do you want to go to Eurovision?

Even though I only started taking part in the MESC a few years ago, last year I decided to take a year off the Eurovision to focus on my job as a full-time financial controller, as well as on my music beyond the MESC. Even so, my intention was always return within a year and, watching it last year, made me realise just how much I enjoy being a part of it and on the MESC stage. Also, I feel that the MESC is a huge platform for anyone who wants to get their message across through song.

Do you believe you can win MESC?

I believe that no contestant takes part to just be there, but everyone wishes to win the contest. I am one of 16 finalists and of course I believe in my song. I will try my best, as I have always done, but winning is not in my control. I just have to be my best self on stage, and in the process leading up to MESC 2018.

What is your favourite Eurovision entry of all time?

'Euphoria’ and ‘1944’ hands down, for 2 very different reasons, because Euphoria was a powerful song and 1944 because it was so meaningful.

Do you believe you can win ESC?

I believe that the first hurdle will be winning MESC 2018, as I said before, TABOO is set out to raise awareness, and I believe that getting the message across is the ultimate goal. I do believe that the song can do well for the reason that it is meaningful, powerful and catchy.

Do you have any pre show superstitions you do before you perform?

Not really, I normally make the sign of the cross, say a little prayer, and try my best to perform well.

Who do you believe is your biggest competition in MESC?

I believe that we all have an equal chance at winning, and the edge will probably be seen on the night, based on the best package and performance. I think that the only person we should compete with is ourselves because, ultimately, even if we don’t win, we’ll have grown and advanced. And that’s something I live by in my day-to-day life, too.

What is your favourite lyric from your song?

Gotta Break the Taboo, no we will never be criminals”

Can you reveal any secrets about your staging or song anything special planned?

This is something I’d like to keep secret, actually. The element of surprise is incredibly important in such a competition, after all J

If you weren’t a singer what do you think you would be doing?

I love what I do in life, besides being a singer; I am also a full time financial controller as I am an accountant by profession. J

Which country do you think will win the ESC this year?

Malta J

If you could duet with a famous singer dead or alive who would it be?

Probably Adele, her voice is beautiful and she is an extremely emotional singer.

If you win ESC what would be the first thing you will do?

Thank the Lord, for helping me be the best version of myself.

Now to get to know you better we should play a little game of “This or That”:

LAWRENCE GRAY

Please tell us what each of your potential Eurovision songs mean to you in a few words and what they represent.

·  'The Right Time'

·  Count on Me'

·  'What Happened to Our Love'

·  'Why not'

·  'You're on My Mind'

·  'Stories'

·  'The One That You Love'

‘The Right Time’ and ‘Why Not’ are the songs that nearly made my dream came true to be the ambassador of my beloved country Malta and so are very dear and Important to me.

‘Stories’ is the one that put me in the game after being out of the show for 6 years because of other important entertainment contacts that I had to honour.

‘The one that you love’ is my baby for I wrote it together with Elton Zarb - a beautiful song with a true story in my private life.

The other 3 are songs given to me in which I had a great time performing but still made yet another hit in my career.

Which one of these songs is your favourite and why? Are any of them still part of your repertoire?

My favourite is ‘The one that you love’ because it’s a true personal story and because I wrote it so it’s very personal to me.

2014 was the last time you attempted to represent Malta . What have you been doing in the meantime and what was the reason for this break from the competition?

2016 was my last time taking part in the show not 2014. With the song ‘Your Beautiful’. Obviously in the meantime I was still working hard in my entertainment business , my not taking part in last year’s show question you have to ask it to those who choose the entries at that time not me maybe they thought that my song was not good enough.

Grazzi Lawrence and every success in the contest!

ELEANOR CASSAR

Eleanor Cassar is hoping to represent Malta in Lisbon with “Back to life”. Here, we catch up with Eleanor on her preparations for the big night…

Eleanor, many thanks for taking the time to talk to us! How are you and at what stage are you with the preparations for your participation in the MESC 2018?

I’m working very hard and preparing myself vocally. Last touches for my Outfit, still discussing regarding the stage /performance.  I have my team behind me that we are working together hand in hand.

Before talking in more detail about 'Back to Life', can you tell us about yourself? When did you start singing? Are any other members of your family musical and if yes, can you tell us more about them? Did you enjoy a musical education and who have been or are your main musical influences?

I’m the youngest one from Family of 7, I started singing at very young age, . I took part in a lot of small local festivals were I always had positive results. At age of 12 one of my teachers in school in Encourage me to start taking singing lessons, from there I never looked back. No I don’t have any family members that sing or play an instrument, but my family loves music and every year follows this festival.

Do you have a motto in life and if so what is it?

Live Day by Day!

Live and let Live!

Eleanor, you were born in Malta . Can you tell us more about the place?

I came from a small village called Luqa. I started singing in the main Theatre of Luqa, age of 11. We have many cultural activities in the village. We celebrate the feast of Saint Andrew that is very popular in Malta as we celebrate a wonderful feast every year. I feel luck & proud that I’m from this village.

If you have participated in the Malta Song for Europe / GO Malta Eurosong previously or many times. Can you tell us more about these experiences and what they taught you?

I’ve been participating in this Festival for 9 years now, always was a different experience with different memories. The most that I really love in this festival is the preparation and the atmosphere backstage and on stage. In my opinion this Festival is a big opportunity to the singers and can open doors and gives more in the music industry.

February 2018 and you will present the song 'Back to Life' with music and lyrics by Jonas Gladnikoff and Michael James Down. Can you tell us something about the song and what it means to you? Why should this song be the one to represent Malta this year?

This year I took a risk and went out of my comfort zone, it’s a different style that I usually sing. The   story of this song is about a person who is in a relationship and is suffering from psychological abuse. Finally she finds the strength to let go and started a new chapter in her life. The song offers everything that is good for Eurovision, Modern, Powerful, and Strong Lyrics and also it’s a catchy song to sing with. Also its shows my vocal potential.

How are the preparations going and can you give us a little clue as to how the song will be staged? Will you have backing vocalists supporting you? Have you decided what you will be wearing?

Together with my team we are still discussing regarding stage, performance, graphics, outfit …but what I can confirm is that I will be alone, just me.

How did the collaboration with Jonas and Michael James come about and what was your initial reaction when you heard the song? Was it written with you and the Eurovision in mind or was it a happy coincidence?

As I decided to do the comeback I spoke with a great friend of mine Glen Vella and from there we started working and discussing, he mentioned me two composers that are Michael James Down and Jonas Gladnicoff . They send me the demo Of Back to Life and I fell in Love with this song, so we decided to start working on this song.

What would it mean to you to represent  Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest?

It means a lot, I have been dreaming since I was very young age, I represented many times and achieved great results. But to represent Malta in the Eurovision is the most prestigious think to do. It’s a big opportunity and good show case. I’m working so hard for this dream to come true.

How important is the Eurovision Song Contest in Malta ?

Maltese People are big fans of this Festival. And it is a great opportunity for the singers.

Have you followed the contest closely and do you have a favourite winning song?

I’ve been watching this festival since I was 10 years old, I followed every year, I remember myself buying the single of the winner every year, and sing with them in front of my bedroom mirror. Yes my Favourite were Little Child, More Than Love, Keep me in Mind and The One that I love.

What in your opinion is the recipe for a successful Eurovision entry?

I think there’s no any recipe to win this Festival, we had many chances to win in the past so I think with a good song, good singer and good team yes we can bring the Eurovision home.

Let us imagine we can go back in time. If you could take one of Malta 's songs to the Eurovision again but perform it yourself which song would it be and why?

Defiantly with the great ballad Little Child.

In 2016 the song selected during MESC 2016 was not the one that actually represented Malta in Stockholm . This year, just like last year, it has been announced that the song will not be changed. What is your reaction to this decision?

In my opinion if the song was chosen from the people, the people pretend to see the singer perform the same song that they chose.

What did you think about the winning song last year, 'Amar pelos dois' performed by  Salvador Sobral?

To be honest wasn’t my favourite but I think he was so simple and natural that he stole people’s hearts.

This year the Maltese entry will be chosen entirely by a 50/50 split between a televote and jury. How do you feel about this?

To have a jury is very important as they will understand more the music and the techniques. Probably jury they come from music background. Also the other hand the people have the right too to choose their favourite.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I love to go out with my family for a good dinner, or if in summer I really love swimming. Also I need to do the role of a mother and housewife as well.

Apart from singing, what other profession or professions interest you?

I wish if I had the chance to study Beauty or do make up.

If you could choose one person to sing a duet with who would it be and why?

I really wish to sing with our great Maltese Tenor Joseph Calleja and internationally definitely with Celine Dion or Bruno Mars.

Are you a superstitious person? Do you perform any rituals before going on stage?

No I’m not; actually I’m more spiritual person.

Time for you to be the Tourism Ambassador for Malta . Can you tell us about your homeland and what makes it so special? What is your favourite dish from  Malta and can you describe it?

Malta is one of the most beautiful places in the world, with so much history and culture, infect this year our capital city Valletta was chosen for the Capital City of Culture for 2018. Malta known for our beautiful sunny weather and for the beaches, good Food and kind people.

My favourite dish is sea food or Rabbit. But we have our traditional food like ‘Pastizzi’ (cheese cakes) and for dessert we have the ‘Imqaret’

Do you have a message for the readers of this interview?

I would like to thank all the supporters for their continued support, it means so much to me as It gives me more determination and energy. Hope you will like my performance on the final night, I’m very looking forward to sing for you all. Much Love xx

Grazzi Eleanor and every success in the contest!

  AVENUE SKY

AVENUE SKY are… Aidan, Andy, Clive, Joseph, Kevin and Karl and they are aiming high with their song “we can run”. Let’s find out more about the boys…

Avenue Sky many thanks for taking the time to talk to us! How are you and at what stage are you with the preparations for your participation in the MESC 2018?

We are all very excited to be on MESC 2018 stage. At the moment we are at the very last stage of our preparations for the final night. We have been working hard to be physically, vocally and mentally prepared for the final night.

Before talking in more detail about 'We Can Run', can you tell us about yourselves? When did you start singing? Are any other members of your family musical and if yes, can you tell us more about them? Did you enjoy a musical education and who have been or are your main musical influences?

Avenue Sky is a 6 member local boy band formed in the beginning of 2016. Members are Kevin (35), Karl (31), Andy (26), Clive (26), Joseph (24) and Aidan (18).

All of us members are professionally trained soloists. The experience that some of us have varies from various festivals and competitions on the island and also hit singles that managed to make it to the top of local radio charts. As a group we have worked on cover versions and also on original material, which material has put us also on the local charts this summer.

This experience contributes well to the main aim of Avenue sky, that is, to give to our listeners and followers an enjoyable experience through the music that we create together. Our different ages, different opinions and different genres of music is what make our music special to us as we manage to get the best out of each and every member. And through that we want to present to the public the best possible experience.

Avenue Sky is under the mentorship of the talented Glen Vella. His vast experience and technique is what guides us to be who we are today.

Do you have a motto in life and if so what is it?

Yes, sure we have. To always stay true to ourselves and to never forget from where we come from!

You were all born in Malta ? Can you tell us more about the place?

Aidan, Andy, Clive, Joseph and Kevin were all born in Malta except for Karl who was born in Australia . Malta is the beating heart of the Mediterranean . The sun, crystal clear sea and clear blue skies make our island the best place to be at J

If you have participated in the Malta Song for Europe / GO Malta Eurosong previously or many times. Can you tell us more about these experiences and what they taught you?

This is our first time that we will be participating in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest.

February 2018 and you will present the song 'We Can Run' with music by Jonas Gladnikoff, Matthew Ker and Glen Vella and lyrics by Jonas Gladnikoff and Matthew Ker. Can you tell us something about the song and what it means to you? Why should this song be the one to represent Malta this year?

Our song “We Can Run” is penned by Matthew Ker and Jonas Gladnikoff composed by Matthew Ker, Jonas Gladnikoff and Glen Vella.

Our aim with this song is to present to the public an uplifting message. Basically the song is saying that whatever situation you might be going through, never lose hope, and do not ever give up because as long as there is blood in our veins and air in our lungs you are surly able to rise again. Through music you can find your inner strength to keep on going strong.

It will be very presumptuous of us to say why our song should be the one to represent Malta in Lisbon . However we strongly believe in our entry and we are prepared to present it to the general public and the judges as a complete package, therefore it will be up to them to decide which is the best entry to represent Malta in Lisbon in May 2018.

How are the preparations going and can you give us a little clue as to how the song will be staged? Will you have backing vocalists supporting you? Have you decided what you will be wearing?

Being a six member boy-band we sincerely hope that there will be enough space for all of us to fit so no backing vocalists!! J Jokes apart, our main focus on the night while on stage is to deliver the feel good factor of our song to the audience in the auditorium and also to the audience watching at home. All attire has also been sorted out and it is going to be left as a surprise for the final night so make sure you watch us J

How did the collaboration with Jonas, Matthew and Glen come about and what was your initial reaction when you heard the song? Was it written with you and the Eurovision in mind or was it a happy coincidence?

Our entry has been written for us by both composers and lyricist with Eurovision as the main purpose for the song.

What would it mean to you to represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest?

It would definitely be the ultimate honour to be able to fly the Maltese flag in the Eurovision Song Contest!

How important is the Eurovision Song Contest in Malta ?

Extremely important. It is actually the only contest that stops the Nation!

Have you followed the contest closely and do you have a favourite winning song?

We follow closely the contest each year and our favourite entry and winner is Heroes by Mans Zelmerlöw

What in your opinion is the recipe for a successful Eurovision entry?

We often discuss of having the best package for Eurovision. This has to be; impeccable vocals, excellent stage presence and delivering the best of emotions on stage. We believe that these three main ingredients make the best recipe for a Eurovision entry.

Let us imagine we can go back in time. If you could take one of Malta 's songs to the Eurovision again but perform it yourself which song would it be and why?

Amber’s Warrior 2015. The musical arrangement for that entry was amazing!

In 2016 the song selected during MESC 2016 was not the one that actually represented Malta in Stockholm . This year, just like last year, it has been announced that the song will not be changed. What is your reaction to this decision?

Since the public has been given the opportunity to choose the song we feel that the public’s choice should be respected.

What did you think about the winning song last year, 'Amar pelos dois' performed by Salvador Sobral?

A heartfelt song of pure music that touches both heart and soul.

This year the Maltese entry will be chosen entirely by a 50/50 split between a televote and jury. How do you feel about this?

We agree with this method of voting. As there will be a professional point of view when coming to choose the winning act. The jury will give an unbiased result focusing on various technical details that the general public sometimes tends to ignore.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Meeting up for coffee to discuss future musical endeavours together.

Apart from singing, what other profession or professions interest you?

We all have singing very close to the heart … maybe song writing. That should be very interesting to do.

If you could choose one person to sing a duet with who would it be and why?

Beyoncé. She is an amazing artist and also one of the most versatile singers we ever heard.

Are you a superstitious? Do you perform any rituals before going on stage?

Not really superstitous. Before going on stage we all like to regroup individually, we give those 10 – 15 minutes were we mentally prepare ourselves and then we give a little pep talk to each other and off we go!! J

Time for you to be the Tourism Ambassador for Malta . Can you tell us about your homeland and what makes it so special? What is your favourite dish from Malta and can you describe it?

Malta is the jewel of the Mediterranean . It’s bright blue skies filled with beautiful sunshine and friendly people make our island so special. Also the vast and enriched culture and centuries of history make our islands more unique. Favourite dish is definitely Rabbit stew – It is to die for!!

Do you have a message for the readers of this interview?

We would like to say a big thank you to all the reader for your support and also for taking the time to read our interview. We would also like to say a big Hello to all the Eurovision fans. Hope that you like our entry for MESC 2018 – ‘WE CAN RUN’.  Also we would like to thank you all for promoting Eurovision and also for contributing to the growth of this prestigious Contest

Grazzi Avenue Sky and every success in the contest!

RICHARD MICALLEF of ‘Richard & Joe’

Richard Micallef will attempt to represent  Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 with the song 'Song for dad' – with his dad! We caught up with Richard during preparations for MESC 2018 to talk about his career so far, his previous experiences at the Malta Song for Europe / GO Malta Eurosong, and of course working with his dad on the song he hopes to take to Lisbon.

Richard, many thanks for taking the time to talk to us! How are you and at what stage are you with the preparations for your participation in the MESC 2018?

First of all thank you for the interview. Me and my dad are mainly focusing on the vocals of this song, trying our best to get the harmonies as tight as we can.  We don't intend to be doing any somersaults on stage and there won't be a fancy dance routine, we are just gonna be ourself and hopefully connect with the audience in an emotional way as its a song that can relate to many people.

Do you have a motto in life and if so what is it?

Live for today cause tomorrow never comes.

Richard, you were born in Malta . Can you tell us more about the place?

Malta is a beautiful island in the Mediterranean Sea . Malta is home to some of the nicest beaches in the Mediterranean and  history lovers will definitely have lots to do and see as there are many historical buildings and monuments including Mdina , Valletta and the oldest standing temples known on earth just to name a few. It is also great for people who simply want to have some fun and relax as Malta has lots or entertainment hotspots which cater for all age brackets. In a nutshell Malta is a little paradise and we Maltese are very lucky to be born here. Viva Malta

If you have participated in the Malta Song for Europe / GO Malta Eurosong previously or many times. Can you tell us more about these experiences and what they taught you?

Both me and my father have entered the Malta Eurovision song contest before in the past , in fact this is going to be my 10th performance on the stage and every single time I have performed on that stage it has been a wonderful experience and also a great platform to connect with the local audience. This is the main reason why I always wanted to come back to that stage. I must admit that the Eurovision song contest has always been good to me having placed second ones and also been fortunate enough to win it in 2014 with my band called Firelight which includes my three siblings. Last time that dad entered the malta song for Europe was in 1991 with the song that was sang as a duet with Helen Micallef, The song was called "can't let go".

February 2018 and you will present the song 'Song for Dad' with music and lyrics by yourself and Cyprian Cassar. Can you tell us something about the song and what it means to you? Why should this song be the one to represent Malta this year?

The song was written by myself ( Richard ) and produced by one of Malta 's top producers called Cyprian. Together we worked on the song to give it a modern and fresh sound without taking out my signature country/folky style which is what people in Malta  know me for and a style that works well with the tone of my voice. Out of all the times that I have participated in the Malta Eurovision song contest I already know that whatever the result , this year will be one that I will remember for the rest of my life as I get to share the stage with my greatest inspiration / mentor and awesome father ... JOE GOERGE.

How are the preparations going and can you give us a little clue as to how the song will be staged? Will you have backing vocalists supporting you? Have you decided what you will be wearing?

Regarding stage performance, we are going to keep it simple and be ourselves there will not be a fancy dance routine just a father and son doing their thing on stage.

How did the collaboration with Cyprian come about and what was your initial reaction when you heard the song? Was it written with you and the Eurovision in mind or was it a happy coincidence?

I wrote the song last April and I had never written a song for my dad so when I picked up the pen and started writing and strummed the guitar and started composing I thought to myself that it would be amazing to also perform this song on the Malta Eurovision song contest Stage, after all the festival is the best platform in Malta to launch a song. Until this point my dad did not know of anything so one day when he came to my house to have a coffee I played "song for dad " on the guitar acoustically for him. His reaction to the song was that it was a good song and he asked me what are my intentions for the song. I answered by stating that I wrote this song for him and me to sing at the next Malta Eurovision song contest, if we are lucky enough to make it to the finals. He then answered by saying that I should sing the song with my sister or brother as nobody wants to see a 70-year-old on that stage. As time went by I managed to convince him and here we are.

What would it mean to you to represent  Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest?

Representing Malta again in the Eurovision song contest would be absolutely amazing and the fact that I would get to do it all over again with my father will be the cherry on the cake.

How important is the Eurovision Song Contest in Malta ?

In Malta everybody watches the Malta Eurovision Song Contest even the people that don't like the Eurovision will be watching the Eurovision song contest to slander it. Maltese families tend to gather up and make a small party at someone's home while watching the finals making it a nice family event that one looks forward too once a year.

Have you followed the contest closely and do you have a favourite winning song?

I think that this year there is a very tough competition and the songs are all at a high-level and different to each other so to me every single song that is in the finals has a chance to win. It's all depends what the jury and the Tele voting go for on the night.

What in your opinion is the recipe for a successful Eurovision entry?

In my opinion I don't think that is a specific recipe for a successful Eurovision entry as if there was ... Well then wouldn't everybody would be using this recipe? I do believe however that it is important to have a song that stands out from the rest and normally this is a winning factor.

Let us imagine we can go back in time. If you could take one of Malta 's songs to the Eurovision again but perform it yourself which song would it be and why?

In my case this would definitely be my song "coming home"  in the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest . I would relive that moment over and over again if I could. Absolutely amazing.

In 2016 the song selected during MESC 2016 was not the one that actually represented Malta in Stockholm . This year, just like last year, it has been announced that the song will not be changed. What is your reaction to this decision?

To be honest ... what is the point of making a festival of such a high-level and present this festival to the public of Malta and then ask them to vote for their favorite song along with the jury, Then get that song that won and change it. To me this makes absolutely no sense. To me, Eurovision should be about nations competing against each other in a friendly environment with songs that are homegrown. Sometimes you can have a country competing with a song at Eurovision where that same song is written by songwriters and performers that have absolutely nothing to do with the country they are representing. Is this idea only crazy me?, isn't it better to do your best at your merit then be the best with no merit.

What did you think about the winning song last year, 'Amar pelos dois' performed by  Salvador Sobral?

I was happy to see such a simple yet beautiful song win the contest. It definitely not a typical Eurovision winning song but the song connected to many European hearts and therefore won the contest.

This year the Maltese entry will be chosen entirely by a 50/50 split between a televote and jury. How do you feel about this?

The voting system is something that changes on the regular basis in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest. Every voting system has its pros and cons. In reality, matching the same voting system as the actual Eurovision voting system is quite fair I think.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

In my free time I enjoy going on long walks with my dog and trying my best to exercise to maintain a good fitness level I also enjoy going out for lunches with my beautiful wife to be Raisa, of course writing and recording new songs is always something I enjoy dearly. As for my dad he is a very busy man as in his pension years he is very active. He runs his own community radio station which keeps him on his toes.. he also has a home recording studio which he spends lots of time at ...then there's also babysitting the grandchildren.

Apart from singing, what other profession or professions interest you?

To be honest both me and my dad could not imagine a life without music as both of us are full-time musicians and depend solely on Music to make a living.

If you could choose one person to sing a duet with who would it be and why?

The person that I always want to sing with you at with is the person that I am actually singing a duet with this year which is my dad

Are you a superstitious person? Do you perform any rituals before going on stage?

Dad doesn't have any superstitious rituals but I do. I am not going to state them here because they are quite silly.

Time for you to be the Tourism Ambassador for Malta . Can you tell us about your homeland and what makes it so special? What is your favourite dish from  Malta and can you describe it?

You can read the answer to an earlier question to let you know what I think about our beautiful country but regarding favourite Maltese dish : At the moment my favourite dish is a Maltese dish called "pulpeti"  it is made from mashed potato and beef . At the moment me and my fiancé go around Malta to find particular Maltese tea bars that serve "pulpeti" as there speciality.

You have already represented Malta on the Eurovision stage in 2014 as part of 'Firelight'. Can you tell us more about your experiences in Copenhagen and about the song you performed there, 'Coming Home'? Is it still part of your repertoire?

I was lucky enough to represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest, I was extra lucky to enjoy the whole experience (which was mind blowing) with all my siblings. It will be a memory that I will stay with me forever. We relive the experience on a smaller stage each time we perform the song "coming home" in our local events.

Was your Father with you in Copenhagen and what words of advice did he give you?

Yes, he simply said " enjoy the ride "

Do you have a message for the readers of this interview?

Both me and my dad would like to say thank you for all the beautiful comments we have been receiving these past few weeks and we both hope that we can touch your hearts with our song and make you feel good inside because at the end of the day that is what it's all about. Thanks again Richard and Joe.

Grazzi Richard (& Joe!) and every success in the contest!

RHIANNON

Rhiannon will attempt to represent  Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 with the song 'Beyond Blue Horizons'. We caught up with Rhiannon during her preparations for MESC 2018 to talk about her career so far, her previous experiences at the Malta Song for Europe / GO Malta Eurosong, and of course the song she hopes to take to Lisbon.

Rhiannon, many thanks for taking the time to talk to us! How are you and at what stage are you with the preparations for your participation in the MESC 2018?

I am very well thank you! It is definitely a busy period with preparations, rehearsals, interviews and appearances within these coming weeks, but I am enjoying every moment of it. Preparations are well under way!

Before talking in more detail about 'Beyond Blue Horizons', can you tell us about yourself ? When did you start singing? Are any other members of your family musical and if yes, can you tell us more about them? Did you enjoy a musical education and who have been or are your main musical influences?

My passion for music has grown with me since the very tender age of 3. In over twenty years of dedication to music, I have cultivated a voice unique to contemporary music in Malta . I am the first, and so far, the only member of my family to be dedicated to music which makes my achievements twice as satisfying to me as everything I have learnt and mastered, I did on my own.

Throughout my career, I have been a contestant in numerous local and foreign festivals, whilst I remains a resident member of Animae Gospel Choir, under Pamela Bezzina’s direction. I also pursue musicianship in piano, as I have recently started composing and writing my own music. Major musical influences have been Karen Clarke Sheard, Aretha Franklin and Beyoncé.

‘Take a Look’, my first single, made it to #1 in the local radio charts. Since then, I have met with Cyprian Cassar, who soon became a mentor and close friend. This collaboration led towards my Malta Eurovision Song Contest submission for 2017 with Fearless. Just a year after my debut at the MESC scene, I have even released my first ever music video for a stripped acoustic version of Fearless, while I have worked on various other local projects such as: ORENDA, Artemisia: 100 Remarkable Women, and the Opening Concert for V18,  all while completing my University Degree.

Laid-back, humble and rooted in self-discovery, I hope my voice is one that will provide solace and silence audiences. Aimed at intrinsic conceptual discovery, my music promises to be empathic and deeply personal.

Do you have a motto in life and if so what is it?

My life’s motto can be summed up into Ghandi’s quote about the mysteries of life: Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

Rhiannon you were born in Malta . Can you tell us more about the place?

It is a nation which packs glorious variety into its small archipelago comprised of Malta , Gozo and Comino. You'll find prehistoric temples, fossil-studded cliffs, hidden coves, thrilling scuba diving and a history of remarkable intensity. Malta 's geographical location in the centre of the Mediterranean made it an alluring and much-fought-over prize, and the islands are full of majestic above- and below-ground defences. The capital, Valletta , built by the Knights of St John , is a harmonious grid, Mdina and Victoria are fortress-like hilltop towns, and watchtowers dot the coast. Even Malta ’s fishing boats resonate with the past, their prows painted with eyes, just like the boats of their Phoenician predecessors.

If you have participated in the Malta Song for Europe previously or many times. Can you tell us more about these experiences and what they taught you?

Taking the MESC stage for the very first time last year, has truly been an encouraging turning point in my life; not only having inspired me to grow as an artist, but also flourished my development on a personal level. It has opened doors to numerous opportunities and friendships. Definitely an experience I will cherish forever!

February 2018 and you will present the song 'Beyond Blue Horizons' with music and lyrics by yourself and Cyprian Cassar. Can you tell us something about the song and what it means to you? Why should this song be the one to represent Malta this year?

Beyond Blue Horizons is the product of an artistic experiment that I have been working towards the past couple of years. The song is a conceptual and emotional ballad perfectly highlighting artistic versatility and vocals. The contemporary ballad is unique and exclusive from the other 15 competing entries, both through its writing technique and style: sourcing the voice as the core instrument in driving dynamics, intensity and melody. Composed and penned by myself, and Cyprian Cassar of Tenishia fame, this modern and soulful piece is enriched by a powerful message and eloquent harmonies, sung by the 2011 MESC-winner Glen Vella, and the remarkable vocalist and tutor Pamela Bezzina.

Inspired by the hardships my parents have faced throughout my 20-year career in music, to invest in me and in my future, Beyond Blue Horizons, is a song of praise and gratitude of their unfailing efforts and love.

I believe that Beyond Blue Horizons is a song with huge potential. Not only because the song conveys immense emotions of real-life experiences but also because the song delivers … and I do my best work, live on stage

How are the preparations going and can you give us a little clue as to how the song will be staged? Will you have backing vocalists supporting you? Have you decided what you will be wearing?

I am unable to comment about specifics, but do expect something different from me this year. Make sure to watch the MESC on 3rd February, 2018 . (You can watch it on-demand on www.tvm.com.mt)

How did the collaboration with Cyprian come about and what was your initial reaction when you heard the song? Was it written with you and the Eurovision in mind or was it a happy coincidence?

Beyond Blue Horizons is a song I wrote together with Cyprian Cassar. Having been experimenting with the tune for over a few months, I was very pleased with the outcome. The song is very much a reflection of the music that inspired me to pursue my career in the first place: soul with a slight touch of gospel.

What would it mean to you to represent  Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest?

Representing Malta in Lisbon 2018 would be a dream come true! Some would regard it as the epitome of their career. I think it would just be the beginning!

How important is the Eurovision Song Contest in Malta ?

Eurovision Song Contest is one of the largest artist platforms in my country, and by far the most popular. Being a small island, with limited opportunities for musicians and artists, we seek international opportunities. Eurovision, for me is not simply a competition, but an exhibition of the rich talent we have.

Have you followed the contest closely and do you have a favourite winning song?

Yes, I have been following the contest since I was very young. My favourite winning song is Euphoria – Loreen.

What in your opinion is the recipe for a successful Eurovision entry?

In considering past ESC winners, namely 1944 ( Ukraine ) in 2016 and Amar pelos dois ( Portugal ) in 2017, we can definitely conclude that songs of which live performances have been sentiment-enriched, have triumphed over commercial and radio-fitting entries.

Let us imagine we can go back in time. If you could take one of Malta 's songs to the Eurovision again but perform it yourself which song would it be and why?

Angel – Chiara. That song is just, WOW.

In 2016 the song selected during MESC 2016 was not the one that actually represented Malta in Stockholm . This year, just like last year, it has been announced that the song will not be changed. What is your reaction to this decision?

I personally agree with this decision. While a revamp or change in song at a later stage could increase our chances in the competition, it may well not be suited for the singer. The jury and the public would have chosen a winning song, and we should respect and believe in their opinion.

What did you think about the winning song last year, 'Amar pelos dois' performed by  Salvador Sobral?

It was one of the most sincere and heartfelt performances I have ever seen on the Eurovision stage. Simple, and profound. I was so glad it won!

This year the Maltese entry will be chosen entirely by a 50/50 split between a televote and jury. How do you feel about this?

I wholeheartedly agree with this option. Malta has always fared well in placings at the ESC abroad when jury votes were considered. I believe a 50-50 splits yields an equilibrium between the popular and the technical vote.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I enjoy spending time at the park with my three dogs, reading, travelling and hiking.

Apart from singing, what other profession or professions interest you?

I am pursuing my academic career to be a lawyer, but if I did not have my music career, I would definitely become a doctor!

If you could choose one person to sing a duet with who would it be and why?

Sam Smith. His voice is so unique .. and I love his style.

Are you a superstitious person? Do you perform any rituals before going on stage?

No I am not superstitious. I believe in perseverance and commitment. I try to be as calm as possible before going on stage .. and some laughter too! It’s good for the soul

21. Time for you to be the Tourism Ambassador for Malta . Can you tell us about your homeland and What makes Malta so special? What is your favourite dish from  Malta and can you describe it?

The Maltese archipelago, to me, is one of the greatest places on Earth. We are blessed with sunshine 300 days a year, beautiful panoramic coastal sceneries and a relatively easy way of living. Sure being a group of small islands with just a few hundred km² of land will surely have its limitations, but the Maltese surely have the biggest of hearts.

My favourite Maltese dish would definitely be rabbit dishes, preferably in garlic and wine jus.

Do you have a message for the readers of this interview?

This year I would like to encourage our readers to believe in themselves and stay true to what makes them who they are. Speaking from my experience, an artist’s most intricate dilemma is finding the balance between what is true to your heart, and what pleases your audience.

Make a statement. Not for them. But for you. This life that we are blessed with cannot be lived for them. Trust me, your authenticity will be remarked.

Grazzi Rhiannon and every success in the contest!
