Poignant lyrics and a solid track .. the issue will be the language with this one (in getting the message across). Great final in France and I like the song but think it may struggle ..

I think France made a poor choice, (Emmy was much better,) but I suppose the song is just about OK. It is not going to set the world alight by any means and will really struggle in the final in Lisbon .

As well as having a poignant message, Mercy is also a fresh and vibrant slice of French electro-pop and should do well across the whole of Europe . A cracking song!

Very 90's but without oomph. Boring, slow and I seriously had to check the timeline to make sure it hadn't passed the 3 min. mark.

Singer is good, but lacks charisma.

A simple piece of French electronica which proved popular with the domestic audience but not so much with the international juries. Will the repetitive nature of the title prove a little grating though? I like the song but as yet, don't love it.

Destination Eurovision was always going to be between 'Eva' and 'Mercy' and in the end Madame Monsieur won the hearts of the French public. Interestingly 'Mercy' was not as popular with the international juries who placed 'Eva' 1st. This contemporary, electronic track deals with an important and moving subject matter but the staging in Lisbon will need to get the message across for it to succeed if it remains entirely in French.

Madame Monsieur deliver a simple song that has many parts. Middle of the road, slight electro, slight dance, slight anthemic! I want something memorable for the performance in Lisbon to match the simple song. More popular with televoters which should give it a high right hand scoreboard finish.

I was so shocked that international juries didn't wanted Mercy to advance to Lisbon . Gladly televote supported as deserved, such a chic song, with a minimalistic show, deserved to be shown in Lisbon . Well done France !!!!

Well, to my ears it has that 'retro' feel and sounds very 'French' in style, so I can understand why it won.  But it's not to my taste and I find it quite dreary and repetitive. I don't think it'll cut it in the contest but, well, who knows?

Very good song, something different which I like. I am not sure this will do good at the Eurovision but we had quite a few surprises recently so... I'm glad France chose quality over cheap pop song.

Mercy is a really catchy modern pop song with fantastic lyrics and a great message behind it. The National Final performance is a little bit basic but if they work on the staging then I think it could do very well. France are on a roll at the moment!

France is trying to win for the forty-fourth year but ... The French song this year is a typical song of the French music scene which is in "a crisis". The second largest nation in Europe still haven't found the way to reach the goal ....the GRAND PRIX  and probably will not reach it again this year.

A beautifully constructed and mesmerising song, clever use of the word 'mercy' as well. Of COURSE this won't win and I doubt I'll listen to it too often again, but 7/10 for staying true to its roots and not following the Euro-crowd.

7

Amar

A very smooth and touching song! The duo has great stage presence and I have no doubts this will shine on stage. I can't see this making a huge impact on the scoreboard, but I wouldn't be surprised if they break the top 10!

I love this song. Even before I knew what the song was about, I was immediately captivated by the melody. This is how I got into Eurovision back in the 1980s - through the music (I didn’t often understand the words when every song was in its own language). I’ve no idea if it will do any good (the international jury of Destination Eurovision only put it 4th), but it’s my favourite French entry since 2002. Wonderful.

I think this song has many similarities with Finland last year - a song several fans like because they have listened to it 100 times It does not have the ability to capture the attention of those millions of viewers who watched it for the first time on the final night and have to vote.

Will this be 2018's "Occidentali's Karma"?  Mercy wows us with wonderfully emotive lyrical content about a child born on a refugee boat but all in a language most voters won't understand.  Strip away that and you are left with a pleasant pop song with no real vocal or musical hook.

7

Samantha

Even without the cultural context, this musically blends "chill and atmospheric" with "anthemic" in a way that hits my ear just right. This is how you handle a "message" song without beating it over people's heads.

This is an interesting and intriguing song.  Electropop in a minor key should work well.  I also have no worries about performance or staging, and the word “mercy” will allow a singalong.  My concern is that a strong message, delivered in French, will rely heavily on national commentators for explanation.

7

Roberto

I like this very much. The inimitable French touch strikes back. Catchy, pleasant, strong lyrics. Elegant, modern and original. This duo has quite everything to be a real contender in Lisbon . Bravo la France

France duo Madame Monsieur will be representing France at Lisbon in May after been selected from Destination Eurovision.  This track had my attention from the time I heard it.  Émilie Satt and producer Jean-Karl Lucas make up the duo, and have a taken a story of a mother and her child “Mercy” and their journey… I think France will do well this year.  Good Luck

This is a grower, first times I listened to Mercy I didn’t care for it. Now, I can tolerate it. It is still a rather boring song, however I like the singer’s voice, it has a nice texture to it. The last repetitive minute is tedious and makes no sense.

I liked this song when I first heard it and it's grown on me since it won the very high quality French final.  It's so modern and topical and with a great uplifting ending.  Hoping it does well in Lisbon .

This is very french which it should be good but not this time. After 2 good year France is dropping back to mediocrity. The song is very generic french pop, it doesn't stand out in any way.

Not Included (just missed out on the 12):

Nico - A slick and haunting modern slice of French pop that plays cleverly on the interpretations of thank you and mercy. Bold and uncompromising, it deserves to do well. 8.5

Octavio - t's a very good and current song, but also a bit generic and forgettable. The melody I'm not crazy about and her voice is not strong enough, I am sure with the right staging that this will go right in my opinion- 7
