My name is Gary Speirs and I’ve decided now that 2014 will hail my 25th Eurovision journey - God willing that I make it there of course! That's me on the left, well before it all started ;-) I started watching Eurovision in 1974..... I started recording Eurovision (to video) in 1983..... I first attended Eurovision in 1988...... God willing (**) 2014 will be the 25th Contest travelled to..... 2013 was my 21st time in the Arena for the Final..... Travel to 20 cities in 17 countries, representing Wales on the UK Jury for Bergen 1986, a 3 second flag-waving TV outing in Moscow 2009 and ending up in a Eurovision winner’s hotel room on the night they won… Wait, I’m getting ahead of myself…. With no involvement at all 1987, 1991 or 1999, every other year since 1986 has had Eurovision as a special high point...

This story is dedicated to the many many great people that I have met over the years; fans, journalists, TV-people and artists. From the early days of letter writing and cassette tapes, through to video tapes, the beginnings of fan clubs and the first conventions, to being on the UK Jury at the BBC, to daring to travel to a Contest in 1988, to the many more Contests visited since, the age of the CD and now the DVD and mp3. What a fantastic hobby this is and has been and what great memories to look back on. Here's to more great euro-times with one-of-a-kind euro fans! |
